The Creation of a Swedish Financial Coalition
The initiative toward the Financial Coalition was taken in 2008 where ECPAT Sweden and Skandiabanken invited all Swedish banks to take part in a Swedish financial coalition against child pornography. Inspiration was gathered inter alia from the already established American Financial Coalition. The finance market minister of the time, Mats Odell, justice minister Beatrice Ask and Queen Silvia were quick in lending their support to the initiative.
As early as 2007, ECPAT Sweden initiated the work in creating a Swedish financial coalition in dialogue with Skandiabanken, the Swedish National Criminal Police, the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority, the Swedish Banker’s Association, Pro Card and Setterwalls Law Firm. In a close cooperation between the Swedish National Criminal Police and Skandiabanken, in 2007 a method was developed that impedes and prevents transactions that are made to pay for images of child sexual abuse. This method has become an important starting point in the Finance Coalition’s work.
In the beginning of 2008, the board of the Swedish Bankers’ Association decided to work toward the association’s members joining the Financial Coalition. The four major Swedish banks joined the Financial Coalition in 2009 and other banks followed soon after. The Swedish Bankers’ Association has an important role to play in coordinating this work.
